an introduction

an introduction.

in our words. is a blog created to showcase, support and learn from female entrepreneurs, trailblazers, activists and creatives. We believe there are powerful lessons to be taken away from each individual story. We hope with every entry, you walk away inspired and educated.

Hi all!

Welcome to the new and improved site for Emma Knudsen, the label. It has been a dream of mine for a long time to have a space to write to you. A space that is raw, real and honest.

If you follow us on social media, you know that transparency is key for me and owning/ growing a small business is no easy task. I have certainly had my fair share of setbacks! I hope this space will be a valuable tool to communicate, educate and inspire one another. I not only intend to give a candid, behind the scenes look into this business, but to also feature other amazing female creators, business owners and industry experts.

Now, a little bit about us, for those who may be new. I say "us" but its really just me, Emma Knudsen. Thats right! It is still very much a one woman show! However, I can't take all of the credit, as we have many amazing contractors that have helped propel this brand forward in the past 4 years.

I started this business in summer of 2016, and we are now going into our 5th year in business. Emma Knudsen, the label started out purely as a side hobby. After years of trying to land a design or marketing job in the fashion industry, and consistently being told that I didn't have enough experience, I decided to pursue my passion for design and business via an online shop through Etsy. Everything was handmade and made to order. I had bolts of fabric in my living room, and I would sew and pack and ship orders until the early hours of the morning.

As I'm sure you've gathered- we have since grown a bit (grateful)! We then made the transition to a factory, after going through multiple failed attempts at finding one, we eventually came across our Vancouver factory. They were/are beyond wonderful to us and helped grow this brand when our customer base was still very small.

Flash forward to present day, and we have recently transitioned to a factory overseas, and pretty much flipped our entire operations on its head! If you follow along with us on instagram, we have been quite candid about the struggles (and successes!) of this process. We still intend on using our Canadian factory for smaller runs, however in order to grow and scale this business, this was the right move for now. More on that, another time!

There have been many growing pains and challenging moments. Moments where I have questioned my path as an entrepreneur; wondering if I am cut out for it; wondering if I have a thick enough skin to make it in this industry. This is a feeling that I know is not lost on fellow entrepreneurs. It is hard work. There is no sugar coating that, but the reward is SO worth it. Hearing how confident a woman feels in our clothes, makes every trial and tribulation seem insignificant.

Now, I have a question for you- who do you want to hear from on this blog? What do you want to hear about? Let us know. We can't wait to hear from you. This is just the beginning of what I believe will be an incredibly powerful learning tool and platform to support and learn from other powerhouse women, in their own words.

Thank you all for being here. Signing off for now-

Emma Knudsen
